Based on now famous Lean Canvas, I have build a personal development canvas to help individual and team leader to use questions to understand the personal vision and the motivation behind it.

Let’s go over each section,

Section 1 -

Personal Tagline, It is a positive punch line which describes who you are and what value you bring and is memorable. Paul Hellman of “You’ve got 8 secs” say that in today’s attention economy you have got 8 secs to get your message across.

Example from the web -

Coca Cola — Taste the feeling

Disney — Where dreams come true

Freakonomics: The hidden side of everything (also a book, but a great tagline none-the-less)

Here is one of me-

Elevator Pitch, @Tannahill-Moran, Dorothy. Elevator Speeches That Get Results: Create A 30 Second Introduction For Greater Success states,

What is an Elevator Speech? The concept of an “elevator speech” is based on a measurement of time. You should be able to articulate your point in the amount of time it takes you to go between floors in an elevator. In other words, about 30 seconds. It is a form of self-introduction.

The possible format as per her is, I do what? To whom? For what kind of results?

Here is one of me-

As a trusted product leader I commit product execution through collaboration bringing value to business and customers.

Section 2 -

Using another framework — GROW — The GROW Model of Coaching and Mentoring — Skills From MindTools.com

Reality — Write current status, your hard skills like coding, instruments etc. and soft skills like communication.

Section 3, 4 & 5 -

Using JTBD framework — ⦿ Jobs to be Done (jtbdtoolkit.com)

Job Performer — You as an individual.

Job (What) — The job which could be your goal, vision which you want to reach , complete which will bring an outcome that brings positive emotion in you, feel achieving something. The motivation, what I want to get done, achieve in order to get the outcome.

Action + object + context

Example 1 — Transform my personal brand through blogs to be recognized as a thought leader in Product visioning

Example 2 — Develop my data skills to be known as data architect

Section 5, is the how of JTBD framework — The process of how we can get the jobs done. In Agile, we have user story mapping and in JTBD we have JTBD jobs map.

Here is an Job map for Example 1 above —

Section 6 — Metrics, How will you measure you are reaching your target?

“How do I know if I’m getting there?”
A Key Result shows you how you’re progressing towards your Objective. Think of it as a signpost with a distance marker.

Key result should show a change towards progress, should be quantitative, should be touch but within control

For Example 1 in Section 3, 4 & 5 above, we can define KR as

Share content about product visioning twice every month

Interact with one thought leader every three months

Read one book every month about business growth

Ok Now, your turn. Do share feedback on how to improve it. And share how you have used this concept at your end. Happy Canvasing!
